LanScan is a good Mac app. It scans the local network with ARP packets, and it can also scan public IP ranges using Ping, SMB and mDNS. Hostnames are resolved through DNS, mDNS and SMB, and it offers SMB domain discovery and custom hostname editing. If your work stays on the Mac and you need those tools with no device-count cap, it is a strong choice.
IP Scanner runs natively on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro, and it reads MAC addresses on each of them. Customizations sync across your devices through your own private iCloud container. Pro is a one-time purchase, and Ultra, also sold as a separate universal app for $39.99 (US), removes the device limit everywhere. Pro and Ultra add a Network DVR-style history browser, and Ultra adds Home Radar, which sends push alerts on iPhone and Apple Watch when a device joins or leaves and gives a morning briefing of overnight changes.
Remote Scans shows what another copy of IP Scanner finds on its own network, such as your home Mac, on your iPhone. The results travel through your own private iCloud container, not a 10base-t server. The free IP Broadcaster menu bar app for Mac runs headless to supply that data, so you can check a network from elsewhere without keeping IP Scanner open. LanScan has no iPhone or iPad app to do this from.
Both apps answer the everyday question of which IP address belongs to a device. A scan lists each device with its name, IP address, MAC address and manufacturer. In IP Scanner you can sort the list by name, IP address, MAC address or last seen, and assign your own names and icons. In LanScan you can edit hostnames. The MAC address is the most reliable identifier, because an IP address can change over time.
If you are moving off Fing for a Mac tool, both apps above scan your local network directly. Angry IP Scanner is another free and open source option for Mac, Windows and Linux. It is distributed from angryip.org rather than the App Store, and it has no iPhone or iPad app, so it covers the Mac but not your phone.
It depends on your devices. If you only use a Mac and want public IP range scans or SMB domain discovery, LanScan is a strong choice. If you also use an iPhone, iPad or Apple Vision Pro, or you want full results for up to 15 devices per scan in the free version, IP Scanner by 10base-t fits better.
LanScan is a free download with a Pro in-app purchase. Its free trial shows every device it finds, but it hides some hostnames, comments, TCP ports and IPv6 addresses until you buy Pro.
Yes. IP Scanner is native on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro, and it reads MAC addresses natively on each one. LanScan is available for Mac only.
The free version has no feature restrictions and identifies up to 15 devices per scan. Pro, a one-time purchase, removes the limit on the platform where you buy it, and Ultra removes it on every platform.
Download IP Scanner free from the App Store. Or try Angry IP Scanner, which is free and open source but has no iPhone or iPad app.
