Hi,

Was wondering how long it take IP Scanner to find new and removed IPs when a devce is turned on/off. I was trying to debug my home network when a vista comp was hit with internet connection troubles after a botched installation. After it was fixed, the same machine with the same MAC address would appear twice with 2 different ip addresses.

Furthermore, after having shut down the offending vista machine for about 5-10 minutes, then turned it back on, it just would not show up at all, even after a 10 min wait.

Is there a way to force an ip detection update or is the information taken frm somewhere?

thx

Some of IP Scanner's network probes use a large amount of bandwidth and those routines are run less frequently. However, stopping and restarting the scan should restart all probes.

If you are getting 'false positives' you can also turn off the 'hidden devices' option. This option relates to the use of address resolution information, which is often cached by OS X for periods of time (even after the device is no longer on the network).

fwiw, I have had this need frequently for the past couple of weeks and "restarting the scan" does not refresh the device list.

Tap/Hold of the "rescan" button does update the device names… i.e. from "mydevice" to "unknown device" if that device has been turned off or removed from the network.

I have found that the most reliable way to get a fresh scan is to open "settings" and turn wifi off, then turn it back on, then return to ipscanner and run a new scan.

fwiw, this is not specific to ipscanner… other iOS network scanners exhibit the same behaviour.

Hope that this information is of value.

between 30 and 60 seconds – this is determined by the iOS system network cache

Version 2.9 showed up a couple of hours after the last post, so, loaded it and ran a couple of tests and observations which I hope will be of value.

Tap/Hold button response used to be clear… i.e. think it would pulse when held the appropriate amount of time…

Tap/Hold with devices removed from the network shows different behaviour.   Disconnected devices show up as "unknown devices" but some recall their connected device name after a second or so… some continue to display as "unknown devices"

After multiple test scans, ipscanner seems to drop the user to the desktop… has happened several times today, both with 2.9 and the prior version.

Simply toggling wifi off, then on reliably forces a fresh scan.  THERE IS NO PROBLEM using this method to force a fresh scan… imho, it's important that the users know that repeated scans do not show a true picture of currently connected devices and that toggling wifi can be used to clear the cache.

I ran multiple rescans for intervals up to five minutes after the initial scan.  Disconnected devices continued to show in all scans until wifi was toggled.  It will always pick up devices connected after the initial scan, but never drops disconnected devices until wifi is toggled
